Vinton is a town on Roanoke's east side, incorporated in 1884 and built largely around the railroad and textile industries that defined the region's early economy. The town's older neighborhoods along Pollard Street and Hardy Road contain homes from the early twentieth century, while the postwar decades brought ranches and capes to the hillsides above the Roanoke River corridor. A significant portion of this housing stock has never had a meaningful bathroom update.
What Vinton's Homes Typically Have
In Vinton's oldest homes — those built before 1940 — bathrooms were added rather than designed in, and they reflect it: single small rooms with original cast iron fixtures, ceramic tile set over plaster, and minimal storage. These bathrooms are often surprisingly durable structurally but completely dated aesthetically and functionally.
The postwar ranches that dominate Vinton's hills were built with the standard mid-century bathroom: 5x8 or 5x10, one tub/shower combination, a vanity that's now 50+ years old, and floor tile in whatever was fashionable when the house was built. Many of these homes have sat in the same family for decades and the bathrooms haven't been touched since the Carter administration.
Bathroom Work We Do in Vinton
- Tub-to-shower conversions — the most common request in mid-century Vinton homes; the cast iron tub comes out, a custom tile shower goes in
- Full renovations — complete teardown and rebuild with correct waterproofing, new plumbing where needed, new tile, new fixtures
- Tile replacement — removing original ceramic and installing new floor and wall tile over properly prepared substrate
- Cosmetic refreshes — new vanity, toilet, mirror, and lighting without opening walls
