Cave Spring is a community in southwest Roanoke County that developed intensively during the 1960s and 1970s. The subdivisions off Brambleton Avenue and Colonial Avenue, along Route 419, and in the valleys south of the Blue Ridge Parkway are filled with split-levels, ranches, and raised ranches built by production builders serving families leaving Roanoke city. This is the peak era of the builder bathroom — a room designed to be functional and nothing more, with the cheapest tile and fixtures that could be specified at scale.
The Cave Spring Builder Bathroom
If your Cave Spring home was built between 1960 and 1980, the original bathroom almost certainly has:
- 4x4 ceramic tile in a color that was discontinued before 1985 — harvest gold, avocado green, Spanish brown, or similar
- A one-piece fiberglass tub/shower surround that was installed to replace the original tile — typically a mid-1990s update that itself now looks dated
- A vanity that's been replaced once but not twice — a 1990s oak or white laminate unit that's now showing its age
- A second bathroom — either a half-bath off the master or a full bath in the lower level — that's often in even worse shape than the main bath
These bathrooms function, but they don't work well for the way people actually use them. The tub hasn't been used in years. The fiberglass surround is discolored and difficult to clean. The vanity has no storage. These are the projects we do most often in Cave Spring.
What We Do in Cave Spring
- Tub-to-shower conversions — removing the unused tub and building a proper tile walk-in shower
- Complete renovations — everything out, rebuilt with correct substrate, waterproofing, and modern fixtures
- Tile replacement — removing original builder tile and replacing with a layout and tile choice that works for the room
- Cosmetic refreshes — vanity, toilet, mirror, and lighting updated without touching tile or plumbing
